The Village of Bayville, sometimes called Pine Island, is an incorporated village located along the waters of the Long Island Sound. Bayville is approximately 1.5 square miles surrounded to the east by Centre Island, the west side by Lattingtown, and by a third exclusive village, Mill Neck, on the south. The village maintains its own library, post office, volunteer fire department, garbage pick-up and a water department. BAYVILLE is in the Locust Valley School District
Bayville was incorporated in 1919. Historically, Matinecock Indians inhabited the area as earl as the 1500's. Then, in 1658, Daniel Whitehead bought land in the area from two Indians, and by 1674, the area, then known as Oak Neck and Pine Island, was divided into 23 smaller parcels for pasture land. The name Bayville was adopted in 1859 because of water all around and the several safe harbors for cargo-carrying vessels.
Enclosed on three sides by affluent towns and Villages, this North Shore enclave has developed from a summer cottage spot to a year round community. The main thoroughfares of Ludlam Avenue and Bayville Avenue, lead to the towns main shopping district dotted with independent shops frequented by summer visitors and residents alike.Typically, residents traveling to Manhattan by train will drive to Locust Valley or farther stations of Syosset, Glen Cove, Oyster Bay or even Roslyn, where train schedules are more frequent.
There are no franchises or super chains in Bayville so the Village keeps it tranquil image. However, travel to regional malls closer inland is often a 30+ minute trip. Yet, clearly most residents and visitors to Bayville have an appreciation for the boating life which begins April 15th and ends November 15th of each year. Boat owners can utilize mooring spaces, launching permits, dinghy and kayak storage spaces at West Harbor Beach and Creek Beach Marina. Additionally, the three village beaches -- Soundside and West Harbor for swimming and Creek Beach for boat launching and fishing offer a lovely day on the water.
While quaint and charming, Bayville is home to The Famous Scream Park, Winter Wonderland Park and the kiddie-friendly, Bayville Adventure Park. There are attractions for children of all ages with seasonal fun and family activities always on the horizon.
