Great Neck is a region on Long Island that covers a peninsula on the North Shore of Long Island, which includes other villages and hamlets including the constituent communities of Village of Great Neck, Great Neck Estates, Great Neck Plaza, Kensington, Kings Point, Russell Gardens, Saddle Rock, Thomaston, Great Neck Gardens, Harbor Hills, Saddle Rock Estates and University Gardens as well as an area south of the peninsula near Lake Success and the border territory of Queens.
There is an abundance of retail, commercial and industrial business within Great Neck. From professional services, real estate and assisted living communities to upscale clothiers, restaurants and jewelers, there is probably not much the towns main business district does not offer its many residents. There is an abundance of architectural styles in Great Neck ranging from English Tudors and Colonial Revivals to Art Deco, Victorian and Modern. Closer to the business district, there are condos, co-ops and townhouses ranging from studios to three bedroom doorman buildings.
The Parkwood Sports Complex offers an Olympic-size swimming pool and tennis courts, both indoor and outdoor, at the as well as indoor skating rink and a hockey program. In addition, the park district cultural center, Great Neck House, offers concerts, art classes and movie nights. There are hiking trails at the 175-acre Kings Point Park and picnic areas and more at parks spanning the peninsula. Housing options vary greatly from studios and single bedroom co-ops to Capes, ranches, colonials, Tudors and Mediterranean styles as well as a number of Victorians, some dating to the 1880's.
Great Neck is a 25- to 35-minute commute into Manhattan via the Great Neck station. There is also the Bus Service which connects the villages to the train station and offers service to several destinations in Nassau County and Queens from the station, while the southern part of the Great Neck area can also directly access the Q46 New York City Bus on Union Turnpike at the border with Glen Oaks and the Q12 bus on Northern Boulevard at the border with Little Neck.
Kings Point
North of Great Neck, deep into the Peninsula on the North Shore of Long Island, sits the Village of Kings Point. Historically a lush secluded area, residents still covet the privacy that living on the peninsula offers. Though not populated with as many of the expansive sprawling estates the area was known for during the early 1900s, Kings Point is still home to magnificent Gatsby-era residences many maintaining ornate colonial-French mansion hybrids in brick or limestone with gambrel roofs, wrought-iron detailing, gilded embellishments, arched windows and balustrades.
There are multiple parks and a waterfront for boating, with several private neighborhood associations offering swimming pools, docks and other amenities. There are no commercial businesses in Kings Point but the shopping districts on Middle Neck Road in Great Neck and Americana Manhasset on Northern Blvd. in Manhasset offer fine selections.
There is a short 25 minute trip from the Great Neck LIRR Station into Manhattan and the easy access to the main thoroughfare of Northern Blvd keeps the drive into the City under 60 minutes.
